Vispār man izrakteņu kompānijas ir tuvas. Vairāk es esmu pētījis un turējis pozicijas "klasiskajās" kompānijās. Labprāt iepazītos ar kādu mazāk izplatītu izrakteņu kompāniju. Vai vari pateikt kādu tikeri?

Lynas owns the richest deposit of Rare Earths in the world at Mt Weld, 35km south of Laverton in Western Australia.  A feasibility study has been completed on the Rare Earths deposit and all Australian approvals required for project development have been received.

Mt Weld Rare Earths Oxide (REO) deposit known as the ‘Central Lanthanide Deposit’ (CLD) is without a doubt the world’s richest Rare Earths ore body, easily capable of supplying up to 20% of the global market for 30 years.

Rare Earth Magnets

Neodymium Rare Earth magnets are used in hard disk drives, CD-Roms and DVDs; the voice coil motor controls the arm that reads and writes information onto the disk and a Rare Earth magnet gives better control allowing thinner tracks and more information storage. More stable spinning is achieved with a Rare Earth magnet driving the spindle of the disk drive.

Flat Panel Displays

Cathode ray tube (CRT) and plasma televisions as well as computer monitors are coated with phosphors which generate the primary colours red, blue, and green. Phosphors that generate the colour red require the Rare Earth element europium, for which there is no alternative. The introduction of plasma televisions saw the development of a new blue europium phosphor that retains brightness ten times longer than previous blue phosphors. Phosphors generating the colour green are doped with the Rare Earths terbium. A combination of these primary colour phosphors are used to create the white ‘backlight’ used in LCD screens and the energy efficient ‘tri-phosphor’ light bulbs.

Cerium oxide, through its unique physical and chemical properties, has been the building block upon which glass polishing has been based for over 40 years. It is a very efficient polishing compound as it removes glass both by its chemical dissolution and by mechanical abrasion. Polishing powders are used to polish cathode ray tubes (CRT), plasma (PDP) and liquid crystal display (LCD) glass.

iPods and MP3 Players
Neodymium magnets are much more powerful than alternatives, providing better performance from a smaller size which has lead to many miniaturised applications.

Tiny Neo magnets are used to drive the speakers within earphones, including Apple’s popular iPod music player, as well as in numerous other high performance speakers, headphones or buds; resulting in smaller, lighter speakers with faster base response and lower overall distortion. Another recent use has been the inclusion of neodymium based magnetic pickups for bass guitars.

Improve Energy Efficiency

Increased population and economic growth leads to greater demand of the world’s energy, which means increased use of our limited fossil fuel reserves.  Rare Earths are already playing a vital role in conservation of these reserves, and are likely to play an even larger role in taking us forward to the hydrogen economy.

The world’s fossil fuels are limited, however with the billions of dollars invested in the global oil and gas infrastructure it is important we use these reserves efficiently.

Rare Earths are supporting the uptake of energy efficient initiatives through their unique physical and chemical properties, which allow them to; protect the environment by lowering energy consumption; and improve lifestyles through energy efficient alternatives that save money without sacrificing comfort and reliability

Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Global warming due to green house gas emissions is a concern for us all. Rare Earths already play a vital role in the reduction of green house gas emissions.

Many scientists believe that global warming is caused by a human-driven increase in greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere. In an effort to combat this effect, some 141 countries, accounting for 55% of greenhouse gas emissions, have ratified the Kyoto accord, which pledges to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by 5.2% by 2012.

Rare Earths are playing a pivotal role in greenhouse gas reduction through their unique application in automotive catalytic converters, hybrid vehicles, and energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Hybrid Vehicles

A hybrid vehicle cuts fuel use by combining a gasoline engine, battery-powered electric motors and brakes that capture energy from stopping. Each of these components rely on Rare Earths; the battery is a nickel–metal hydride unit (NiMH), the metal hydride component is an alloy of Rare Earths; and the electric motor, generator and regenerative braking systems are dependent on Rare Earth magnets.

Many forecasts for hybrid vehicles show rapid growth rates, 60% growth per annum through to 2010 is typical. Booz Allen Hamilton has forecast hybrid vehicle sales could reach 20% of North American new car sales by 2010, or 4 million units. Hybridcars.com track the strong growth of hybrid vehicle sales in the US. 60% growth per annum from the current US sales figures would equate to approximately 2 million hybrids by 2010 in the USA alone. The USA represents approximately one third of the global car market.

Overall a typical hybrid vehicle contains approximately 15-16kg of Rare Earths, with the majority contained in the batteries. A typical NiMH battery would use over 12kg of Rare Earths. Therefore USA demand for Rare Earths from the battery alone could grow to approximately 25,000 tonnes in 2010.
