Laskaridis Group: A prominent investor in all kinds of businesses
The Group owes its establishment primarily to success in the refrigerated shipping trades. Several secondhand reefers have been purchased this year, notably a seven-vessel fleet from fellow Greek operator Magnus Carriers, a company which has now quit the sector in favour of reinvesting in tankers. The move brings the Lavinia - controlled fleet back up to a substantial 82 vessels, the vast majority of which are reefers although the fleet also includes a tug and six small tankers of 9,000 dwt under that support the group's other shipping speciality of high-seas bunkering.
Consolidated within this tonnage list is the reefer fleet of Riga Transport, 85% - controlled by the Laskaridis family after the company was privatised by the Latvian government in the mid - 1990s. Servicing of long term contracts of affreightment handled by the group, primarily for frozen fish and squid catces, as well as the high seas trans shipment operations, are managed from its headquarters in the leafy Athens suburb of Kifissia. Meanwhile, carriage of fruit and general market reefer cargoes has traditionally been done through the Hamburg based Alpha Reefer pool and its Frigoship Chartering affiliate. Investments in Lavinia's fleet in recent times has been dominated by a massive reefer building programme at the Ukrainian shipbuilding town of Nikolayev which was commenced more than a decade ago. Over the years, 16 of the heavy ice-class vessels, mostly of 250-270,000 cu ft capacity, have been delivered and are what Mr Laskaridis calls "an excellent end-product".
Two final ships in the series, one of 270,000 cu ft and another of 500,000 cu ft, are expected to finally join the fleet later this year and towards the end of 2004. In 1999, the group invested heavily in what - at least potentially - was the largest fish factory fleet operation in the world, comprising 14 giant Russian factory trawlers operated from Vladivostok. More recently, lucrative conditions in the dry bulk market tempted the group to invest in a triple of super-handymax bulkers ordered by a London Greek partner. Two of these are now trading, while the third in the series, currently nearing completion, has already been sold forward to another owner. For good measure, the group has a rising interest in ship repair. Having long controlled the Astican repair yard in the Canary Islands, it was sufficiently encouraged to acquire a second Spanish yard three years ago.

The privatised Astilleros de Santander - Astander - has been notching up repair and conversion contracts and according to Mr Laskaridis is expected to break even by next year. Recently it agreed to acquire a 25% stake in Stanley Services, becoming the second largest shareholder after the Falklands government which established the company to promote more economic activity in the islands after the Falklands War. Under the latest agreement, the Greek group retains 75% of the bunkering contract, with Stanley Services holding the balance, and this has been extended for a new 10-year period.
"Initially the bunkering contract was developed to mainly serve fishing vessels, but it has expanded into a nice little operation," says Mr Laskaridis. Since the mid-1990s, brothers Thanassis and Panos Laskaridis have made a number of impressive investments in Greece's leisure sector that have established them as one of the country's leading business families. A close involvement with the locally listed company in the Hyatt Regency Hotels group has led to a major investment in the chain's first Greek hotel and the nearby Regency Casino, one of Europe's largest. Recently, as part of consortium with construction group Hellenic Technodomiki, Hyatt Hellas also won a tender to acquire 49% of the Mont Parnes casino in Parnatha from the government. The Laskaridis family again partenered Hyatt in a consortium that has led a dazzling euro 70m facelift of the Grande Bretagne, Athens' most historic city centre hotel, preparing it for next year's Olympic Games. There was also a step into the skies with Cronus Airlines, a small privately controlled carrier. Since a 2001merger, this has made the family the second largest stakeholder in Aegean Airlines, a regional airline with 20 aircraft that is closely rivaling Olympic Airways on domestic Greek routes as well as serving Rome and several destinations in Germany. |

Pagājušajā gadā refrižeratorkuģu pārvadājumu
segmentā bija vērojams mērens frakts likmju kāpums, kas
atspoguļojās minētās flotes finanšu rezultātos – peļņa no kuģu
darbības sasniedza 2 miljonus ASV dolāru. Kā līdz šim, arī pērn
refrižeratorkuģu flotes kuģi pārsvarā bija nodarbināti banānu
un citu augļu, kā arī saldēto kravu pārvadājumos no dienvidu
puslodes uz Krieviju.
